What Do We Do When It Rains at Forest School? Embracing Nature’s Wild Side

So, what happens when it rains at forest school? It’s a question we hear all the time! Running outdoor projects in Lancashire means rain is inevitable—and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Our programs are entirely outdoors, set in public woodlands with no cozy indoor hideaway to retreat to. So, the short answer? We all get a bit wet, a bit muddy, and a lot happier.

For most, that’s perfectly fine—fun, even! But for some, it can be a bit of a shock. With traditional schools opting for indoor play when it rains, and adults sometimes insisting rain equals catching a cold, it’s easy to see why kids might think rain is something to be avoided. At forest school, though, rain is just one of nature’s many amazing gifts and adds a whole new layer of excitement to our play.

Rainy Day Fun: Nature’s Playground Comes Alive

Once the rain starts, so does the adventure. Small streams suddenly appear, perfect for building dams or floating sticks. Slopes get slick, turning into natural slides. Mud pies, muddy faces, and camouflage become the stars of games like capture the flag. Yes, it can get messy, but that’s all part of the experience! Kids discover the beauty of embracing the elements and using the rain to fuel their creativity.

Of course, we don’t want anyone shivering or uncomfortable, so our forest school leaders come prepared. We put up shelters where kids can enjoy a dry spot to eat lunch or do crafts. Campfires are a frequent, cozy fixture; there’s nothing quite like warming up around a fire with a toasted sandwich or the classic treat of marshmallows. A warm cup of hot chocolate does wonders for chilly fingers, too!

And if the kids need a little more warmth, we make sure to keep them moving. One of our go-to games is “Coo Wee,” where everyone’s on the move to avoid being found in the woods—it’s a great way to keep blood flowing and spirits high.

Breaking Rules, Making Memories

One of the joys of forest school is the freedom to toss aside some of the usual indoor rules. We encourage kids to be a little bolder and get a little messier than they’re used to. We love seeing kids who start out wary of dirt and mud eventually embracing every squelchy bit of it. Sometimes, they really go all in, and we know that means some parents are facing a post-forest school car ride with a very muddy kiddo. (Our advice? Bring a bin liner or a towel for the car seat!)

What we notice is that for a lot of adults, watching their kids play outside in all weather brings back memories of their own outdoor adventures as kids. When we let kids experience nature in its true, unfiltered form, we’re helping them form memories they’ll carry with them forever.

So, if you’re ever worried about rain at forest school, remember that rain just brings a bit more wild magic to the woods. We’ll be here, embracing every drop.
